Not My Will, But Thy will Be Done

Matthew 26:31-35 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples.

Jesus predicts that all His disciples will fall away:

  1. a) They would lose their faith in Christ
  2. b) They would lose their faith in Christ because He is rejected
  3. c) Jesus let them know that they would kill Him be He would rise again.

There is the claim of over-confidence

  1. a) Produced by comparing oneself with others
  2. b) Produced by being blind to the cross
  3. c) Produced by not knowing oneself, the flesh
  4. d) Produced by contradicting Christ

There are two wills in Jesus Christ – human and divine

Matthew 26:36 – Then Jesus came with them to a place called a pray over there.”

  1. a) Interestingly that in the Garden of Eden, the first Adam disobeyed God and in the Garden of Gethsemane the second Adam (Christ) will obey God.
  2. b) Jesus took all His disciples with Him accept Judas who was out betraying Him.

Matthew 26:37- And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. a) The time was getting close for Him to take on the sins of the whole world. The same three disciples witness is transfiguration would witness is sorrow.

Matthew 26:38Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

  1. a) John 12:27-28“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”
