Work-Out Your Own Salvation (deliverance)

Work Out – Katergazesthe-means to work on to the finish, to completion, to perfection. 

Philippians 2: 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

It is important to keep in mind that Paul is not talking about working to be saved, which we cannot do.

Ephesians 2:8–For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Paul is talking to saved people – He commended the Philippians for their obedience in his presence. When Paul was with them, his teaching instructed them, his example inspired them, and his encouragement urged them on in their growth in grace-actively pursue spiritual maturity. But, Paul is now in prison and he wants the Philippians to understand that in his absence, each one of them has the responsibility of working out his or her own salvation, which means to continue to grow in God’s grace in order to reach the goal of Christ-likeness. Christ walked in obedience to God the Father. 

Point One – No one can do it for you – you have to do it yourself.  Each person has to take hold to the new life and salvation God has given him/her and he/she is to work on it until it is completed and finish, that is, until God takes him or her home to glory.

1 Peter 2:2 -as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

Why is it necessary to continue to grow spiritually?

1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Point Two – Each person has to love and respect God.

Fear and Trembling – (using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ)

Each person is to fear and tremble because life is full of trails, pains, hurts, tragedies, diseases, accidents, losses, temptations, sin, evil, corruptions and death.  Anyone of them can cause a person lose sight of Jesus Christ, God, Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Point Three – God will operate-if you co-operate

Philippians 2: 13 for it is God who works (energon-energize) in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
